Special Guests Visit from Cambridge United Team Members

Football is one of the most popular activities at Selwyn Hall School, with many of our young people enjoying a game during playtimes and lunchtimes. Knowing how much enthusiasm our pupils have for the sport, we were delighted to welcome members of Cambridge United to school as part of our Careers Week, providing an inspiring opportunity to learn about the many career pathways available within football.

The Cambridge United team spent time with our KS3 and KS4 pupils, delivering an engaging careers-focused talk about the different routes into the football industry. They explained that, while becoming a professional player is one pathway, there are many other exciting careers in football, including coaching, sports science, physiotherapy, performance analysis, media, marketing and more! The session encouraged our pupils to think about the wide range of opportunities that exist within the sporting world.

The visitors also brought along a selection of fun and interactive activities, giving pupils the chance to get involved while learning more about the club and the work they do within the local community. Our pupils were thrilled to meet members of their local football team, many having watched Cambridge United play, and eagerly listened to their stories and experiences. They asked thoughtful questions about their careers, training and what it takes to succeed in professional sport.

One of the highlights of the day was the giant inflatable target goal, which was set up on the school field for everyone to enjoy. Every pupil had the opportunity to test their football skills by aiming for the highest-scoring targets, for some fun and friendly competition.

The visit was a wonderful success and gave our pupils an inspiring insight into the world of football, both on and off the pitch. For some, it sparked an interest in careers they had never previously considered, helping them to realise that with dedication, hard work and perseverance, a future in sport could be within their reach.
